Syrian Heritage and Work: A Story Stitched in Thread
This hand-embroidered artwork was created by a refugee woman—one of the mothers from the Alsama Project community—at Alsama Studio in Shatila refugee camp, Lebanon. For those forced to flee conflict, heritage and the art of work become lifelines—deeply rooted in tradition, memory, and pride.
Through the trauma-informed “Stitching My Story” workshop, each artist is invited to reflect on what heritage, skill, and meaningful work mean after displacement. Guided by gentle prompts, she recalls the rich patterns of Syrian stitches passed down through generations, the pride in her craft, and the hope of rebuilding life through her hands. Every thread in this piece—especially the intricate, colorful embroidery—celebrates the enduring beauty of Syrian textile heritage and the dignity of artisanal work.
Creating this artwork is both an act of emotional healing and a reclaiming of voice. In Shatila camp, where war and upheaval have disrupted lives and livelihoods, this creative process helps women honor what has been lost while imagining what can be rebuilt. Each piece is a testament to resilience, the preservation of culture, and the power of carrying heritage and skill forward, even in the face of adversity.
100% of proceeds from this piece directly support the artist and provide vital educational resources for girls at Alsama Project. Your purchase helps ensure these stories are seen, valued, and that brighter futures remain possible for refugee women and their families.
